as you all know by now, i love home decor! and mine is constantly changing all year; whether i'm moving furniture around, ordering new bedding, switching out artwork or cookbooks and candles, i love exploring ways to make our home feel new and fresh. summer and fall are very different vibes and i've been seeing the autumn colors and textures rolling into stores for some time now... earlier than i was ready for it.
but with october already in full swing, i'm officially documenting all the small ways i'm changing my home over for autumn...
our bedroom...
first we swapped out the macrame for something a bit more personal and darker. this art piece is thrifted from an antique store in Tennessee.
the ladder had linen blankets that we stored away and replaced with a thicker cotton blend throw that we will use as the temperatures continue to drop.
and lastly our pillows and cover blanket: during the warmer months we like a cotton blend, light colors and oatmeal and/or white linens. for fall we've opted for these striped throws that feature a faux leather band across the center and ties along the sides. the blanket is still linen but a much darker taupe to accent the pillows. we never go too dark since our rooms are small, the space still needs to feel open and airy but cosy, and inviting.
think textures, fabrics, and darker hues. store the lightweight blankets and break out the cosy ones that you want to wrap yourself in. add in more contrast & mix elements (i.e. leather pillow w a fabric one... or textured pillow w suede etc.)
the den...
i absolutely love our pottery barn faux fur pillows. we got them last winter on sale and they are massive, 26 x 26. the round textured pillow is from target and still available on their website but we needed something to break up the colors. robb found these striped throws at burlington coat factory and they ended up being perfect for in between the two.
faux furs are always a great option for colder months as are suede pillows and thick knit blankets.
considering the changes to the couch, i decided to keep the shelves minimalistic. we took off all the books except for a few coffee table ones that we love and styled and moved the tray to the console table. since i like things just a tad off base, i added another smaller home decor book to throw off the symmetry.
play around with the placement of your items. sometimes we don't need to add or subtract, just alter. i prefer a minimalistic approach but if you prefer to live life on the edge, alternate how you store and style your books: some upright, some stacked, add in some accents like a candle or picture to a stacked pile... different heights of objects can be an important aspect in your styling too.
our kitchen...
well all of our plant babies are inside, it's too cold for them to survive outside now. so we've created a small green room (so to speak) where we accented with a book and vintage art piece from a flea market in nashville. the baby's breath and clear vase open up this area so it's not just greenery.
our counters are cleared of summer cookbooks and light candles and replaced with darker more rustic pieces such as our dough bowl and this water dispenser my aunt bought for us.
i love the wood against our brick chimney. i cook more during winter, and therefore moved most of our cutting boards out and made sure there were varying textures and sizes in the wood pieces we displayed.
the breakfast nook
i added a textured throw blanket to the hammock chair and switched out the plain pillow for, again, texture. we propped the old pillow against a faux fur (same as the one in the den), and added a small basket with blankets to make the space more inviting to sit in.
our jute poufs have been replaced by this faux leather bohemian style which adds some contrast and depth to this space.
festive decor...
i'm not much for turning my house upside down for a holiday. but some accents can be nice and honestly, they help me get a little excited for something related to autumn instead of just dreading freezing temperatures to come. the pumpkin is a budget store find, they have them everywhere from home goods to TJ maxx etc.and the skeletons are from amazon.
Happy October! hope this gives you some ideas for how to 'fall-ify' your home for the coming months.
think mixing in darker hues w the lighter, adding texture, and swapping light weight fabrics for something thicker and warmer. the same can apply for wall decor: darker, more personal, maybe a statement piece that truly stands out in a room. conversation-starter pieces are great to have since most of the winter we prefer to invite people inside where it's warm and comfortable.
there's no need to break the bank, check out thrift stores, budget friendly home decor stores like home sense, home goods, hobby lobby.... candle scents are an easy change up, or add in a runner rug to the kitchen or layer a darker/ patterned rug to your jute rug. there are so many ways to make a home feel more inviting for the winter months. see what you gravitate towards and have fun with it!
